HOW EVOLVE COUNSELING ASSOCIATES HELP WITH MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH

At EvolveCounseling Associates, we partner with our clients to support women and girls through mental health challenges. Sometimes, the most powerful part of counseling can simply be the freedom, to be honest, and unfiltered, sharing your thoughts and feelings with the empathetic, caring person across from you. The perinatal period (1 year before birth, and up to 2 years after birth) is a vulnerable period in a mother’s life. Our time, expectations, bodies, and family dynamics shift and change in ways that can be both exciting and deeply disorienting. We often feel like we “should” be feeling one way (happy, in love with our babies, grateful). Still, in reality, we experience a range of emotions in this period (isolated, exhausted, confused). At Evolve, we believe that women deserve to be honest and supported in this vulnerable season of life. Counselors at Evolve are trained in maternal mental health and want to partner with mothers in supporting their mental health and self-care during the perinatal period. We support women in all seasons related to mothering: loss, fertility issues, conception, miscarriage, birth, postpartum, adoption, and parenting.

If you are feeling these things, no that you are not at fault. “As many as 1 in 7 moms (1 in 10 dads) experience symptoms of depression and anxiety during the postpartum period. People of every age, income level, race, and culture can develop Perinatal Mood Disorders (PMDs) during pregnancy and within the first year after delivery.” (from PSI)

Talking to a provider trained in maternal mental health can provide you with the support you need.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING:

As you begin counseling for maternal mental health,  your therapist will want to hear more about your story as it relates to mothering, and what symptoms you are experiencing. Your therapist may provide some psycho-educational resources about Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders. You and your therapist will work together to utilize your own strengths and coping skills as you build a treatment plan. Oftentimes, trauma plays a role in our mental health as mothers and caregivers. Your provider may use trauma-informed counseling (EMDR, TF-CBT) to learn more about your situation and supplement your care.
